Certain places stay with us, give us strength for the road ahead, vision for life along the way
I’m Eric Muhr. I started taking pictures on the farm, where my family lived in 1987, with a 1950s Argus C4 rangefinder that had been my great-grandfather’s hobby camera. Today, I use more modern equipment, but I’m still walking and looking and trying, with each photo I make, to save space for you, the viewer, to experience both comfort and challenge in every image. Roughly forty times each year, I hike through miles of the most beautiful scenes the Pacific Northwest has to offer, looking for one-of-a-kind perspectives and experiences of natural landscapes. I create fine art photographs that take you there. Click here to see some of my favorite scenes.
Just think of a room you’ve recently been in where the walls were empty. No matter how nice the furniture, the overall feel of that room lacks character when the walls are blank. A fine art photograph on stretched canvas, textured paper, metal, natural wood, or acrylic creates a finishing element that brings together the furniture, decor, lighting, and color palette. The right fine art photograph takes your room from functional to fantastic. Click here to visit back-country barns and other buildings.
Every image is a poem. Every scene has a kind of structure. The capture of a place, for instance, involves decisions of narrative perspective (where to look, from what position), of cadence (beats, breaks, a line beneath the sky), of tone. And just like a poem, the effective image compresses emotional experience into a single, small expression of longing and of beauty. When displayed, these images shape your experience of home and of work. They can create a sense of calm. They touch each moment with beauty. They provide a source of creative inspiration. They offer welcome.

I set aside at least one day each week to be outside. I live in Oregon where it rains a lot, and this is part of the experience. I almost always take someone with me. Experiencing a new location with a friend or two can help you to see more than you were looking for, and the conversation helps pass the time.
Photographs are more than paper and ink. They can transport you to a different place and time; they can offer escape; they can facilitate emotional experience and memory; they connect us to the places we've been as well as to those where we dream of being.
I founded OregonExplored in 2014 and organized the Explored Co community of photography feature channels in 2017: the vision and experience of explorers, seeking new views, stewarding natural resouces, sharing adventure. I am a member of the Professional Photographers of America.
